Following Spain National Team’s victory in Euro 2008, La Liga champion Barcelona defeated defending champion Manchester United and won 2008/2009 UEFA Champions League. For a few years now, English Premier League has been consistent top performers in Europe, but the beautiful Spanish football may be introducing us to a whole new paradigm of football.
Barcelona lifted up the “Big Ear”, defeating two English giants. Through this victory, they are the first team in Spanish club history to achieve treble. Barca scored 30 goals in 13 games in the European mainstage, Lionel Messi is the top scorer(9 goals), and Xavi Hernandez is the top assister(7 assists) in competition.
The betting guide predicted Man U to become the champion again, and considering the damage in backline for Barca, this seemed very likely. Having 5 straight years of finalists, 3 consecutive seasons of three teams in semifinals, EPL’s oppressive football has proved the strongest in the world. However, Barca, a team which favours attack and beauty, seemed ideal but not the strongest.
Barca’s way
Yet, as Spain did in 2008, Barca knocked out all the pressure playing big boys and became the champion. Barca possessed solid funimentals, world class technique, and maximum organization. It was simply beautiful the way Barca played.
Mancheser is one of the fastest teams in EPL and the most technically complete. However, in front of the delicacy of Barca’s passing style, Manchester United looked like school boys. Without the two starting sidebacks(Abidal and Alves), Rafael Marques, and Gabi Milito, people thought Barca were in a crisis. Guardiola had to move Yaya Toure into the centre back role, put the 36year old Sylvinho in the left, the young Pique in the other centre, and the commanding centreback in the right flank. ManU probably thought that they could easily get through this defence, but in reality, Barca outspeed United. Pique’s incredible passing skills sprayed to the midfield caused ManU players chasing after the ball and Barca owned possession.
The defensive style against Chelsea was out of the preferred offensive style of football Barca opts to play. However, the sleek flow of passing from defense to offense, fast and simple ball touches avoiding ManU’s pressure showed just how beautiful football can be. Moving forwards with short passes cause danger when the ball gets stolen thus required great accuracy, but Barca’s passing and technical skills were simply out of this world. Their passing was smoother than ever, and ManU’s midfield had no idea on how to deal with it.
The center of pass football, Iniesta and Xavi… and La Masia
This kind of impressive football was possible due to the two centremids: Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez. These two were the core members of 2008 Spain National Team. They receive the ball from defence, and play it back to offence. The creativity these players possess is simply astounding. Xavi won the MVP in Euro2008, and Rooney referred to Iniesta as “World’s best player”.
Both Xavi and Iniesta are products of Barca’s youth system. In fact, Victor Valdes, Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquest, and Lionel Messi are all from Barca’s world class youth system. And the technique instilled in the blood of Barca was brilliant. They never looked like losing the game.
And for all those criticizing the British game’s capitalist paradigm, Barca’s victory will come as a pleasure. The victory in Rome was not achieved in a day. It is based on the long term football philosophy Barca have studied. Barca does not select 17-18 year old boys in their youth club because these boys are not trained in “Barca way”. According to Qique Costa’s interview with FourFourTwo, “we do not scout for players in certain positions like many other clubs. The atheletes we look for are those capable of technical excellence, mentality, pace, and quick thinking. A Barca player requires to love the club’s symbol and even the uniform’s color. That is more important than money.”
“DreamTeam” Cruiff’s legacy…beautiful victory
Youth players selected by Barca are divided into 12 teams each with 24people based on age. They live in the dormitory built called “La Masia”. Current manager Pep Guardiola is from here. Johannes Cruijff, who led the DreamTeam and won the first European Cup in 1992, recruited many players from La Marisa in the first team since 1988. Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas, and Everton’s Mikel Arteta are all from here.
Pep Guardiola also inherited this kind of philosophy. He established managerial experience from Barcelon B team and combined his experience as a player and while his stay at Italy. In this result, he won La Liga, Copa Del Rey, and Champions League in one season. Cruijff’s disciple Guardiola has expressed his esteem towards Barcelona’s method. “Cruijff always had a sure plan as to how we should play. He taught us how to supply the ball quick. He appointed the best players and we are still finding for players who know how to pass quickly. Barcelona players all learned this and fans also wish teams play like this. It is a beautiful yet efficient football.”
Strong pressure and fast counterattack do not allow the opposition to play normal football, and aims for their weak points, so is the optimized method for winning. However, it has been criticized for being boring. Yet, Barca’s successful method shows that football can be both beautiful and winning.
Cruijff once said that “big clubs should not only worry bout results. Win is not enough. You must play beautiful football.”
Sometimes they suffered from the opposition’s extremely defensive tactics and some said Barca was unrealistic. However, after the finals, it is all clear. Ferguson and Ronaldo both admitted Barca were better. This is a grand victory which did not negotiate with reality but achieved something greater. Let’s all give our full ovation to the victory of the beautiful game.

two joints, it is called a multi-joint exercise. So like in benchpressing, where you use your shoulder joint and wrist joint, it’s a multi-joint workout. But like in pressdown, where you only use your elbow joint, it is called a single-joint workout. This concept is important because for everyone who wants an efficient body, you must do multi-joint workouts. Every motion we have in life, whether lifting up, throwing, or pushing something, is a multi-joint movement. In other words, multi-joint exercise is the only practical one.
